Deaf Subtitles

Overview

Deaf Subtitles is an augmented reality application designed to replace traditional mobile apps for deaf and hard-of-hearing users using Quest 3s. It provides real-time subtitles in the user's field of view and in physical space from the location of the speech, enhancing accessibility and communication in various environments.

Successes

We had clear advantages over the current mobile app equivalent in many user scenarios. Of course, that's assuming ubiquitous AR glasses in the future:

• Deaf/hard-of-hearing person no longer has to disambiguate between who is speaking when in a multi-person conversation.
• Deaf/hard-of-hearing person included in conversations they would otherwise be excluded from, such as more off-the-cuff or improvised conversation.
• It is in fact easier for hearing people to communicate too.
